Despite the fact that San Juan is the tiniest part of Metro
Manila, it is jam-packed with fun things to do! San Juan has a land area of
just 6 square kilometers and is located in the heart of the city, sandwiched
between Manila, Quezon City, and Mandaluyong. San Juan got its name from the
locals' desire to honor their benefactor, St. John the Baptist, who is
commemorated every June 24th by drenching the streets of San Juan with water
during the town's celebration. So, how do you spend your time in San Juan? The
Pinaglabanan Shrine, Greenhills Shopping Center, Club Filipino, and their own
Agora Complex are all worth visiting. San Juan also has a plethora of other
bars, restaurants, and culinary hangouts that are rich in San Juan history.
History of San Juan
San Juan is also home to a number of noteworthy religious
sites. The infamous St John the Baptist Parish, or more commonly known as the
"Pinaglabanan Church," is where San Juan's own John the Baptist is
revered. The Santuario del Santo Cristo church is the region's oldest, while
the nearby Filipino-Chinese people are served by the present Mary the Queen
Parish in West Greenhills of San Juan.
The Iglesia ni Cristo in San Juan had its main headquarters
in town from 1925 to 1971 at its previous Central Office Complex, which was
then the home of F. Manalo. It features outfits with Art Deco details designed
by National Artist for Architecture Juan Nakpil. San Juan's Chapel is the
absolute highlight of the entire Complex, which includes both the old Central
Office and the Pastoral House. Ka Felix Manalo, the congregation's first
Executive Minister, as well as other Ministers and Evangelical Staff, lived in
these areas. When Manalo died in 1963, modeler Carlos Santos-Viola designed a
catacomb on the Complex grounds.
The name "San Juan District" is derived from the
city's traditional name, "San Juan del Monte." Similarly to other
places in the Philippines, the name is in honor of a holy person; in this case,
Saint John the Baptist stands out as the saint revered by all San Juan
residents. The official name of the city is "Dakilang Lungsód ng San
Juan."
